Instrumentation Design for Ultrasonic Imaging

چکیده

The purpose of this chapter is to show how piezoelectric transduction, sound wave propagation, and interaction with scattering targets are taken advantage of in image formation with an ultrasound instrument. These instruments have evolved over the last 40 years from relatively simple handmoved scanners built around an off-the-shelf oscilloscope to rather sophisticated imaging computers. Much technology has been perfected during this evolution. For example, transducers have grown from circular single-element probes to precision arrays with more than 1000 elements. With better frontend electronics, the operating frequencies have increased as weaker echoes can be handled. As the gate counts of VLSI ASICs* have increased, the numbers of processing channels in array-based systems have risen. With the introduction of reasonably low cost high-speed (20 to 40 MHz) 8to 12bit analog-to-digital converters, digital beam formation has become the standard. The organization of this chapter is based on the discussion of a block diagram of a generalized ultrasound system. Each component of the block diagram will be reviewed in considerable detail. Different design approaches for the various blocks will be reviewed and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. Finally those areas of the block diagram that are targets of significant current research are summarized.

Measurement issues in quantitative ultrasonic imaging

Ultrasonic imaging of " flesh and blood " is vulnerable to the natural variability of these media: the speed of sound is not known, not constant, and not amenable to calibration using simply shaped manufactured samples. When images of high dimensional accuracy are needed, as for image-guided surgery, the " average " or " typical " values used in diagnostic ultrasound may not be good enough. In ...

Ultramorphology of the root surface subsequent to hand-ultrasonic simultaneous instrumentation during non-surgical periodontal treatments. An in vitro study

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the ultramorphology of the root surfaces induced by mechanical instrumentation performed using conventional curettes or piezoelectric scalers when used single-handedly or with a combined technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty single-rooted teeth were selected and divided into 3 groups: Group A, instrumentation with curettes; Group B instr...

Scanning electron microscopic evaluation of root-end preparations.

The use of an ultrasonic apical preparation technique has been advocated recently. Root-end preparations in 30 extracted single-canaled human teeth were evaluated, comparing those prepared with ultrasonic instrumentation alone, or in combination with rotary bur preparation, to those prepared with rotary instrumentation alone. Specimens were evaluated for the presence of debris, smear layer, and...

Root surface defect produced by hand instruments and ultrasonic scaler with different power settings: an in vitro study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the root surface defect produced by hand curettes and ultrasonic tips with different power settings. Forty root surfaces were divided into 4 groups according the treatment: Gracey curettes, ultrasonic scaler at 10% power, ultrasonic scaler at 50% power and ultrasonic scaler at 100% power. Each specimen was instrumented with 15 strokes and the and divided in...

Backscatter coefficient measurements using a reference phantom to extract depth-dependent instrumentation factors.

In previous work, we demonstrated that accurate backscatter coefficient measurements are obtained with a data reduction method that explicitly accounts for experimental factors involved in recording echo data. An alternative, relative processing method for determining the backscatter coefficient and the attenuation coefficient is presented here. This method involves comparison of echo data from...

A comparison of dental ultrasonic technologies on subgingival calculus removal: a pilot study.

PURPOSE This pilot study compared the clinical endpoints of the magnetostrictive and piezoelectric ultrasonic instruments on calculus removal. The null hypothesis stated that there is no statistically significant difference in calculus removal between the 2 instruments. METHODS A quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design was used. Eighteen participants were included. The magnetostrictive a...
